About the Tip Calculator
A tip calculator works out how much to leave for service and what the final bill comes to, without doing the percentage math by hand at the table. Enter the bill amount and a tip percentage, and it instantly shows the tip amount and the new total.
It also splits the total evenly across any number of people, which is the part that usually causes the most back-and-forth arithmetic when a group is dividing a check.
Worked example
Example: a $84.00 bill with an 18% tip comes to a $15.12 tip and a $99.12 total. Split four ways, that's $24.78 per person.
How the split is worked out
The tip is the bill × the percentage ÷ 100, the total is the bill plus the tip, and each person's share is the total divided by the number of people. Amounts are shown to the cent, so in practice most groups round each share up to the nearest dollar or so — the extra cents become part of the tip.
Tipping in your head
Start from 10%, which is the bill with the decimal point moved one place left. On a $64.50 bill, 10% is $6.45. Double it for 20% ($12.90), add half of it again for 15% ($9.68), or take 20% and subtract a little for 18%. Rounding the bill to $65 first makes the arithmetic even easier and changes the tip by only a few cents.
When the split isn't even
An even split is simplest, but it isn't always fair when one person ordered much more. A common compromise is for each person to total their own items, then apply the same tip percentage to their subtotal. Also look for an automatic service charge on the receipt — many restaurants add one for large groups, and tipping on top of it means tipping twice. Customs vary widely by country: in much of Europe and Asia, service is often included or a small round-up is enough.

- Can I use this for a custom tip amount instead of a percentage?
- The calculator works in percentages, but you can back into a specific tip amount by adjusting the percentage until the tip amount shown matches what you want to leave.
